With my new-found love of making AI art, I’ve been looking into different places to make images for free. Though I subscribe to the Pro Edition at NightCafe, I still like to see what’s out there that isn’t going to cost me anything to play with.
The one thing I will say is that if you find a site that says you can make free AI art, read the fine print. Chances are it’s only a free trial period or you only get so many credits to use to make your art. That being said, some of the paid sites really don’t cost that much to use.
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a huge fan and subscriber to NightCafe Studios. I’ve been using it for several months now and have had a ball. Then, I got to looking into other AI generators to see what I could do with them. Here’s what I’ve found so far.
Canva
I’ve had a Canva account for some time now. I use the Pro Edition as I use Canva for many of my Medium.com posts. It’s worth it to me to pay to use the pro tools. And now, they have an AI art generator. It’s not the best generator, but it does make some beautiful photo-like images.
I’m still in the learning process with this program, but it does seem to have a lot of potential. On a scale of one to five, I give Canva’s AI generator a three. Though it does create some beautiful images, it’s still pretty limited.
Craiyon
As I was researching free AI generators, I came across this one. Yes, this is a free AI generator with some restrictions. I’ve only started using this one, but as of right now, I have yet to see it create a decent person. Faces are very distorted, some background images are clearly computer-generated, and it takes a little longer for the images to come up. However, I have created some images that were pretty cool.
There are paid plans to this site. Creation times are a little shorter, no intrusive ads, and no watermarks. However, with the free plan, you can still create as many images as you like (be sure to click the heart at the top of the image to keep the ones you like or they’re gone forever). I give Craiyon a three because you can create some cool images if you enter the right prompts.
BlueWillow AI
This is an AI generator through a Discord channel. I haven’t used this one much, but it can be a useful tool. Simply join the beta group to be added to the Discord channel. Be sure to read the rules as they tell you how to generator your images, separate them from each other, and more.
Word of warning…be careful as it’s easy to get lost in the sea of others creating images as they’re all done in this same rooms. Type mention: yourusername in the search box at the top of the page and your works will come up.
OpenArt AI
Like most sites, this one is a paid site, but they give you 1,000 credits to play with to see if you like it. They offer ten different styles of creation to choose from, but the free credits don’t work with them all. I am happy with some of the images I’ve created on OpenArt and after looking at the paid subscriptions, I’m thinking about signing up. For just $10 per month, you get 5,000 credits. That’s a lot of images.
Again, you have to hit the publish button in order to keep any of the images on your profile. Otherwise, when they’re gone, they’re gone for good. This one gets a four from me just because of how easy it is to use.
UPDATE: I was wrong. You do get to keep all your creations. I’ve gone back a couple of times now and everything I’ve created is still there. (4-4-23)
Prodia
This is another free-to-use site with restrictions. It does create some nice images and there are five different styles to work with, but all images need to be downloaded into your device to be saved. There are paid subscriptions to this site, so you might be able to save them to your profile if you subscribe, but not with the free plan. And again, if you don’t save them, they’re gone.
I actually like this site. This could be a useful tool for anyone looking to create book covers or site banners. You can only generate one image at a time with the free plan, but sometimes one is all you need.
Okay, kids. There you go. If you know of any other AI generators that can be used for free, let me know. I’m growing to love AI art and what can be done with AI images. I’ve got a million ideas running through my head and now I’ve got the tools to help make those ideas happen.
Until next time,
Happy Writing!!!

Oooo, I’ll have to check that one out. I think I might have an addiction.
