Will Kindle Vella Change the Writing Game

No, this isn’t going to be one of those posts that tells you everything you’ll ever want to know about Kindle Vella. This is an honest question. Will Kindle Vella change the writing game? I’m kind of hoping so, but not sure if it will be worth it in the end.

I will admit, I’m kind of excited about this new endeavor. I’ve been doing a lot of reading up on it and I’m excited to announce that I am in the process of creating my own Vella and will have it ready to go live when Amazon makes it happen. But that’s the other thing. There is no set release date and I’m a little nervous about that. They’re saying it will go live in mid to late July, but I’ve seen some who are saying it could be August before it’s ready to go.

I’ve also been checking out the Kindle Vella community boards, trying to make sure I’m doing everything right. But here’s the thing. Nobody knows what’s right and wrong. It’s still a guessing game for everyone and I’m starting to see that includes many of those behind the scenes. There have been a lot of people asking about publishing options and all I see in response is “we’ll be sure to pass that along to the developers.”

I like the idea of having “episodes”. From what I can tell, Vellas will be a lot like writing blog posts. You upload a new episode every day/week/other-week for your readers to enjoy. They get the first 3 episodes for free, then they have to purchase tokens to unlock anything beyond that. However, they never really said how many episodes should be uploaded per story. They do recommend authors have 5-10 episodes ready to go for their release, but they’ve never said how many is too many or not enough.

I asked that question and got a lot of different answers. One author said he had 16 episodes ready for his debut Vella. He said it gave him plenty of room to tell the story and had a nice, sharp ending. Another author said she had over 2K episodes was working on a second season. So there really isn’t a set answer, which is okay in my book.

I’ve got a couple different ideas for my Vellas. I’ve decided to write as though putting together an actual novella. I’ll have several chapters/episodes, but each one will have a set ending. Not sure how many episodes that will entail, but we’ll see how it goes.

As of right now, it looks like this is going to be a hit-or-miss experience. Nobody really knows if this is going to take off or not, but I’m really hoping it does. I’d love to see this work and I can’t wait to be part of it. I’ve never had the chance to be in at the beginning of something like this, so this is a new learning experience for me. Wish me luck.

What about you? Have you thought about getting in on the new Kindle Vella adventure? I’d love to know. Tell us about it in the comments. I’m sure this is going to be the next step in the online publishing game.
