In the Beginning…

As I’ve said before, in order for me to get back into writing, I need to go back to the beginning. Today, I did just that. I went to my local library and picked up the 2017 Writer’s Market. I was pretty excited to see that it was there as our library isn’t a large place,  but they impressed me today.

When I first decided that writing was what I really wanted to do, I didn’t know where to turn. That was before there was a computer in every home. We didn’t get our first computer until like 1996 or 97. And then it was only a WebTV. Remember that?

So, before that, I turned to The Writer’s Market for guidance. I sent a lot of submissions out in the mail, and I got a lot of rejections in return. But I learned a lot in those first couple of years. Now keep in mind, I haven’t used this guide in a very long time. I’m not so sure I remember how or where to start. But as before, I’ll figure it out.

I also picked up a book called “How To Write Anything–A Complete Guide” by Laura Brown. Never heard of it, but there looks to be a lot of information in there. I’m sure there’s something in there that will help me get to the next step.

I often wonder if it’s too late for me. I’m looking 50 in the face and it makes me a little nervous. Then I found this article about about just that topic. “Is It Too Late To Be A Writer?”  by James Altucher. It’s about Louis L’Amour and the the road he had to travel in becoming one of the most prolific authors of all time.  I bow to the master.

I told a friend of mine today, that if she’s really serious about it, go for it. One of the ladies I work with at my real world job, likes to write also. And being 20 years younger than me, I know she’s in her prime and could take her dream to the next level. Now I just have to remind myself of the same thing.

I can do it. I am a writer.
